Riverside School Mascot Contest!

We have been so overwhelmed with the enthusiasm for and effort put into the Mascot Contest!

135 entries were submitted and there was an amazing depth of creativity and heart displayed in each of them.

Please be sure to check out all the designs on the two bulletin boards at school (the Art Board across from the teachers' lounge and the smaller board across the hall from the nurse's office).

Everyone who participated will receive a Riverside Red Hawk pencil.  A handful of honorable mentions that embody artistry, logo-likeness, the mascot spirit, and our core values will receive a fun art crayon.  And our "Final Four" will receive, on top of the pencil and crayon, a Rosie's Frozen Yogurt Gift Card! (Thank you, Rosie's!)

Please congratulate the Final Four! (see their submissions below!)
  • Ethan Shi
  • Rosario Holscher
  • Lily Ritchie
  • Santiago Sandoval

The final logo, which will be developed based on the Final Four drawings by a professional graphic designer, will be announced at a later date!  Keep an eye out for the reveal.

Go Riverside Red Hawks!

Riverside Red Hawk Story

  • The Riverside Song, OUR ALMA MATER was written in 1997 by a former Riverside School employee’s husband, Rob Mathes, who is a multi-Grammy Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning music producer, arranger, and composer. The song, which was recently re-discovered by Mrs. Barrette and Mr. Ronk, talks about our love of Riverside School and our passion for what we learn and the people who spend each day inside its walls. The lyrics also mention two more important symbols for our school: our school colors (red and white) and our mascot, the red-tailed hawk, or more familiarly, the Red Hawk! See images:

Just as the Eagle represents strength and pride for the United States, the Red Hawk is a strong and elegant bird that is native to this area. We can see this beautiful bird gliding above our playgrounds and the 5th grade does a hawk study each year to learn more about these wonderful creatures. It is on the wings of the Red Hawk that our students at Riverside will show their perseverance and strength and spread their own wings as they travel into the future to secure their dreams.

Rob Mathes at Riverside

Grammy award winner and local Greenwich resident Rob Mathes was in school on Friday at our special Red Hawk mascot celebration assembly.

Mr Mathes sang and played the school song on the piano for us; something he wrote several years back, but was only recently rediscovered by Mrs Barrette. Read more here.

The Red Hawk mascot also put in an appearance, much to the excitement of the assembled students!

Sample Logos

  • Mascots and logos are ways in which we identify around an institution, in this case, Riverside School. See below for examples of how institutions similar to and around us (Old Greenwich School, Greenwich High School, University of Connecticut) use mascots in a logo.
  • What would Riverside School’s mascot look like? How would s/he represent our school, its students, its spirit and its aspirations?  We can make it into a logo—but can you help us find our Riverside Red Hawk mascot? Check out our Red Hawk Inspiration Board below to get some ideas!
